Extractions

An extraction is when a tooth is removed from it's socket on the bone.

If a tooth is broken or shows decay damage, the dentist will try to repair it with a filling or crown but may have to extract it if the damage is too much.

Fillings

Fillings are often required to close off spaces in teeth where bacteria can get in and thereby help stem further decay.

Filling materials include, porcelain, gold & composite resin (tooth-coloured).

Amalgam isn't used much anymore due to the concerns around mercury pollution.

Cleaning / Scaling

Its good practice to have a 6 monthly routine of visiting your dentist for a check up and professional cleaning.

This involves scaling teeth and the gumline so that plaque and tartar can be removed.

A polish normally follows which helps remove stains and smooth the surfaces. These processes help to keep teeth and gums healthy.

If, however, there are signs of gum disease, further scaling and root planing may be required.

Polishing

Polishing is used to smooth the surface of a tooth which results in less accumulation of plaque on the surface of teeth.

It is common practice to use a Prophy Cup, which is a small rubber cup, as well am abrasive polishing compound.

Root Canals

A Root Canal (Endotontic Treatment) is required when inflamed or infected pulp needs to be removed from inside a tooth.

The area is carefully cleaned and disinfected followed by a filling and sealing with a rubber like material called Gutta-percha.

The final part of process involved restring the tooth with a crown of filling to protect it.

Root Planing

Root Planing (deep cleaning) is a non-surgical procedure that used in the prevention of gum disease.

When plaque and tartar accumulate under and around your gums, the tissues that support your teeth can be affected and gum disease can develop causing deep pockets to form.

This treatment offers the ideal solution for effectively tackling gum disease.

Gingivectomy

Gingivectomy is a surgical procedure used to level and correct the gum tissue (Gingiva) at the neck of teeth.

The process involves removing gum tissue and can be performed for either esthetic or medical reasons.

Surgical Extractions

A Surgical Extracton is a more complex procedure that is used when a tooth has broken off at the gum line or hasn't erupted in the mouth.

The dental surgeon makes a small cut in the gum and removes the broken or impacted wisdom tooth.
